THE WHITE RABBIT
Lorado Taft was given responsibility for the design and execution of Sculptures at the Horticulture Building at the World's Columbian Exposition of 1893. When, running behind schedule, Taft asked Daniel Burnham if he might use female assistants to speed the work, Burnham is rumored to have said that for all he cared Taft could use "white rabbits" if it meant he would be complete on time. Taft's assistants continued to use the nickname long after the Fair: the sculptors included Edith Yandell, Carol Brooks MacNeil, Bessie Potter Vonnoh, Janet Scudder and Julia Bracken.
